For those who question Frankie Edgar’s decision victory over BJ Penn at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi and doubted he could repeat his performance in the main event of UFC 118, I hope you enjoy silence. Frankie Edgar not only went into his immediate rematch with Penn and showed his previous fight which earned him the UFC lightweight crown was no fluke, he also beat Penn in a way no other lightweight, in fact no other fighter short of Georges St. Pierre, has beaten BJ before. After what many fans considered a somewhat disappointing eye poke victory, Mirko “Cro-Cop” has reportedly left the UFC once again. This time Mirko has signed a three-fight deal with Japanese organization DREAM.
UFC President Dana White is said to be furious with this turn of events. White was quoted by Yahoo Sports as saying, “Isn’t that a dirty (expletive) thing to do?” White went on, “He (expletive) me. The first time in the history of the company I do [a contract] over the phone. He promised me a three-fight deal and he (expletive) me.”
This is a stunning turn of events considering the UFC is considered the prime organization in MMA and by all accounts Cro-Cop has expressed that he was not happy with his previous performance in the UFC.
In 2007 after fighting for many successful years in Japan’s Pride organization, Mirko Filipovic known as Mirko “Cro Cop” made his UFC debut with a win over Eddie Sanchez at UFC 67. After the win Cro-Cop suffered two very devastating loses to Gabriel Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo.
After those losses Mirko decided to take some time off to get his head straight and contemplate his fighting future.
During his respite from the UFC Mirko had knee surgery, and followed it with a three-fight win streak over in Japan. That is when he reportedly contacted Dana White over the phone.
"When Mirko and I talked on the phone, the day that he said that he wanted to come back, let me tell you he was all fired up and basically saying, 'Listen, I got my surgery, I've been training, I want this, I want to come back, I want to win that title, and I want to take a run at it,'“ said White.
After hearing that Cro-Cop had signed with DREAM White’s reaction was not very good. “He fed me this (expletive) about wanting to take a run for the title, and what I think he did was, he went out and did this,” White stated. “He turned down every other (expletive) fighter I offered him, because I needed him to fight Cain. He didn’t just poke Al-Turk; he poked me, too.”, White exclaimed.
Mirko Cro-Cop could not be reached for comment and he did not attend the post UFC 99 Interviews. UFC 99 will probably be the last time Cro-Cop fights in the UFC because Dana White has been known to hold grudges and I doubt he will deal with this fighter again. |
