For those who question Frankie Edgar’s decision victory over BJ Penn at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi and doubted he could repeat his performance in the main event of UFC 118, I hope you enjoy silence. Frankie Edgar not only went into his immediate rematch with Penn and showed his previous fight which earned him the UFC lightweight crown was no fluke, he also beat Penn in a way no other lightweight, in fact no other fighter short of Georges St. Pierre, has beaten BJ before. The biggest Pay Per View in MMA history is with out a doubt UFC 100. With two titles on the line and a few matches that have top contender implications, UFC 100 is top to bottom the most stacked card ever.
The opening match is the only weak match on the card, as Matt Grice (10-2; 1-2 UFC) takes on Shannon Guggerty (11-3; 1-1 UFC). This might be one of those matches where you will not see the loser fighting in the UFC for awhile, or ever again.
The next undercard match-up features two former Ultimate Fighter castmates, as CB Dollaway (9-2; 2-1 UFC) takes on Tom Lawlor (5-1-1; 1-0 UFC) in a solid match-up of wrestlers. This match will probably go to the fighter who exhibits a better stand-up game.
In what could be a very exciting undercard match top Korean fighter Dong Hyun Kim (11-0-1,1NC; 2-1 UFC) squares off against UFC veteran Jonathon “The Road Warrior” Goulet (22-10-1; 4-4 UFC). This should be an even fight but it might come down to Kim having a better chin than Goulet.
Two up and coming light heavyweights clash in a battle that could have fight of the night implications, when the undefeated Jon “Bones” Jones (8-0; 2-0 UFC) takes on “Irish” Jake O’Brien (11-2; 5-2 UFC). The key to this match-up should be Jones superior striking game, as both men are top-notch wrestlers.
In what should be a crossroads match Former Ultimate Fighter winner Mac Danzig (19-6-1; 2-2 UFC) faces the always-tough Jim Miller (13-2; 2-1 UFC). Both men are solid grapplers and tough Ju-Jitsu aces. Miller has shown that a top wrestler can dominate him so Danzig might look to ground and pound.
The final undercard match features the age-less Mark “the Hammer” Coleman (15-9; 7-4 UFC) vs. Ultimate Fighter Season 1 alum Stephan Bonnar (14-5; 5-4 UFC). Both men are heavy handed but if Bonnar can get Coleman down he should have a significant Ju-Jitsu advantage.
Now the main card which almost every match could be a main event on another card. First up is the debut of a highly touted Japanese sensation Yoshihiro Akiyama (12-1-0, 2 NC) taking on Alan “The Talent” Belcher. This fight should be explosive Akiyama has a ton of hype coming from Japan and Alan Belcher is coming off a monster win against Denis Kang. The key to this fight will be Belcher’s punching power vs. Akiyama’s Judo.
The next featured bout is an Ultimate Fighter coaches’ showdown as Michael “The Count” Bisping (18-1; 7-1 UFC) faces Dan Henderson (24-7; 4-2 UFC). I think Michael Bisping will be too much for Dan Henderson. Bisping has better stand-up, and better Ju-Jitsu.
Jon Fitch (22-3-1; 9-1 UFC) matches up against Brazilian Paulo Thiago (11-0; 1-0 UFC) in a welterweight showdown. This should be a huge test for both men as they each are well-rounded fighters. I give the slight edge to Fitch because of his experience, and superior wrestling.
Headlining the card is the Welterweight Championship match between Georges “Rush” St-Pierre (18-2; 12-2 UFC) and the challenger Thiago “The Pit bull” Alves (22-4; 9-2 UFC). I have to say the Thiago has a punchers chance against St-Pierre but that’s about it. Look for St-Pierre to be as dominant as ever.
The Main event of the evening is for the UFC Heavyweight Championship Frank Mir (12-3; 10-3 UFC) faces off against Brock Lesnar (3-1; 2-1 UFC). Lesnar should look to man handle Mir but Mir’s improved Standup along with his far superior Ju-Jitsu should be the key to victory.
In the end UFC 100 should be the most explosive, exciting, and historical UFC PPV ever.
